Dennis Praet - Anderlecht`s Andres Iniesta targeted by English giants

The night of the 21st of September 2011 was a memorable one for two great young and purple talents that wore the shirt of RSC Anderlecht `s youth team.

In London, England, Rumain Lukaku, Chelsea`s 23.5 million Euro summer transfer, made a starting 11 debut for the English giants in a league cup match against Fulham. In Lommel, Belgium, Dennis Praet captured the imagination with a brilliant display in his first senior team match ever, the 4:0 thrashing of the home team in the last 16 of the Belgian cup.

The 17 year-old playmaker provided two assists, the second one a 30 meter brilliant through ball that was finished off by Anderlecht`s front-man Tom De Sutter, who released this statement after the match: "Dennis is our Andres Iniesta. You rarely see such talent."
Praet spent most of his youth career with another Belgian side, Genk, where he arrived at the age of 8. Last year, after several impressive displays for Belgium`s U-16 team that attracted the attention of almost every top European club – Barcelona and Manchester United to name but a few – the family decided that it was time to move on.

At the end it was down to four teams, all known for their great handling of young talents. "I spoke with Lille, Arsenal and Ajax", said father Herman, who finally decided that Denis should stay in his homeland in order to complete his school studies. "Anderlecht is a family, not just a football team", he explained his choich, "First they teach you how to be a human being, then a football player. They seemed the most interesting and professional team. In Genk, they offered no plan."

Anderlecht`s plan was to let Praet start things off in the youth team and gradually integrate him with the senior squad. Earlier this year, wearing the lucrative number 10 on his back, the young jewel was voted the best player in the prestigious Aegon youth tournament, which was watched by scouts from all over the world. It was time for step 2: this summer the 17 year-old featured in some friendly matches with the senior team, and late in September came his superb official debut, this time with number 26 on his back.

The Number10 shirt holds a legendary meaning in the world of football. It has been worn by some of the greatest footballers in history and usually its owner is singled out as the top creative player, the fantasist. It is even more so in Argentina, where it has risen to an almost sacred status, becoming synonymous with the country's undisputable football hero of all times, Diego Maradona (who even named his TV show after his jersey number).

But for the fans of Argentina's most popular club, Boca Juniors, who even had Maradona himself playing for them, in recent years the number 10 has been most commonly associated with Juan Roman Riquelme, the incredibly talented play-maker who led the club to 4 local Championships, 3 Copa Libertadores wins, one Intercontinental Cup win (a glorious victory over Real Madrid) and one South-American Super Cup. With such a legacy behind it, wearing the Boca no. 10 jersey is no small matter. And now, as Riquelme is in the twilight of his career, it seems the golden-blues have already marked his

His position on the pitch, his style of play, his set-piece expertise and his incredible intelligence as he maneuvers his team's attacking moves, all bear a striking resemblance to the reigning 'Numero Diez'. "It is incredible, amazing, to be compared with him. I don't like to talk about myself or compare myself with anyone, although everybody else talk about it. There is only one Roman, I'm not anybody's successor, just a kid who maybe one day could play like he does". Such modesty is in place for a kid who only played once in an official league match (November 2010, under Coach Claudio Borghi), of which he said: "It was unforgettable, imagine I was 16, playing alongside Palermo [Martin], Roman… unbelievable". But modesty aside, Paredes definitely has great aspirations: "I always try to imitate him [Riquelme], I watch him a lot, sometimes I even stay after practice especially to watch him. Like I always watched Zidane. Roman is my role model."

For now, young Leo, who has played for Boca since he was 8 years-old, demonstrates his talent in Boca’s reserve team, where he scored a beautiful long-rage free kick against Argentinos' equivalent last week. Boca's current Coach, Julio Cesar Falcioni, has named Paredes as one of the youngsters who will be given a chance in the first team this coming year, but meanwhile the world got to witness some of his talent: last spring, in the South-American U-17 championship held in Ecuador, he scored 2 goals, created 2 more and was one of his team's best players, alongside Lucas Ocampos, Brian Ferreira and Federico Andrada. Argentina finished 3rd.

If one was to choose a single playing position that is most identified with the golden years of France`s National Team, it would probably be the defensive midfielder. A dynasty of tough leaders in the center of the pitch, players like Didier Deschamps, Emmanuel Petit, Claude Makelele and Patrick Vieira, led the Tricolor to glory, starting with the 98' World Cup win on home soil, through lifting the Euro-2000 trophy.

Even in a list of such quality players, Vieira stands out as one who combined athletic superiority, aggression and tactical responsibility with incredible technique, skill, elegance and leadership, becoming the heart and engine of his team and redefining the holding midfielder position.

In more recent years, France has still produced many quality defensive midfielders; Jeremy Toulalan, Lassana and Alou Diarra to name a few. But as the national side has had to deal with Zidane's retirement and conflicts between players and former head coach, Raymond Domenech, culminating in the infamous World Cup 2010 mutiny, France has been desperate to find its new leader. Taking a look at its class of 91' youth team's last 3 international campaigns, it seems they may have found their man.

Unlike France's senior squad, its youngsters have found glory in recent years. They reached the final of Uefa's U-17 European Championship in 2008, where they suffered a burning0:4 defeat to Thiago Alcantara's Spain. They soon got revenge, beating the same Spain in the final of Euro U19 2010, hosted in France. This past summer, in the U-20 World Cup held in Colombia, France once again reached the final four, losing to Portugal in the semi-final. During these tournaments they have shown off some of their great future talents, including Gael Kakuta and Alexandre Lacazette, but the one player who stood out above the rest was Gueida Fofana .

Wearing the no. 8 jersey and captain's arm band, Fofana played the full length of every match in these tournaments, except for one when he was given rest after securing qualification. A real rock in defensive midfield, he led his team with great physical ability, ball interceptions, precise tackles and clean short passes, but above all a true leader's traits. Add 2 goals to the list, including an extra time beauty in the 2011 quarter-final against Nigeria, which was later on the shortlist for goal of the tournament, and you've got one of French Football's most exciting prospects.

Fofana, who is of Malian and Guinean descent, has started his professional career with Le Havre, where he established himself as a first team regular when only 18 years old, after the club's relegation to Ligue 2. With over 60 performances for Le Havre and 3 impressive international tournaments in his record, he became one of the hottest names in scouts' notebooks around Europe this summer. His list of reported suitors included Fenerbahce, Tottenham, Aston Vila, Newcastle, Lille, Paris-SG and last but not least, Real Madrid. But it was eventually French giants Lyon that snapped him up, for a modest fee of 1.8m Euros (which could later become 2.6), as replacement for Jeremy Toulalan who left for Malaga on a 10m deal.

Andy Polo - Who will land the Peruvian wizkid?

Time sure flies in the world of football. With the International transfer window more than two months away, some European power-houses are already battling behind the curtains of confidentiality to attain the services of the hottest juvenile talents the world has to offer. South America, where local tournaments are nearing their conclusion, is a very attractive location.

Yep, things sure do change fast in football, especially if you ask Andy Polo . How can one 17 year-old player, only 6 months after his professional debut, be the focal point of such aforementioned struggles? Examining the Peruvian prodigy's produce in these past months may provide us with an explanation. With two continental club tournaments, one international youth championship

and 15 games in the top Peruvian league in his resume, Polo boasts a career many veterans would envy.

The young striker's meteoric rise started last March, in the 2011 South American U-17 championship held in Ecuador. The Peruvian team was not generally considered a major power on entering the competition, and was indeed knocked out after the first group stage, but Polo marked a personal triumph, scoring 3 goals in 4 games and making a tremendous impression.

A month later he made his first league appearance with Universitario, on the

biggest stage Peruvian football has to offer. If making your professional debut at only 16 and 7 months is not enough, imagine doing so in the Lima Clasico, the capitol's derby between Universitario an Alianza, notorious for its violent clashes between rival supporters. With 50,000 fanatic Peruvians filling the stands to capacity, this event has recently even cost lives, as one supporter was thrown to his death from a VIP box.

But the young starlet, determined to prove his worth, gave a mature performance, drawing compliments from Coach Chemo del Solar, ex-Tenerife player: "His talent and audacity are unstoppable. I put him on the starting lineup and he behaved like a veteran. I know we will not have him with us for much longer, we have to enjoy him while we can. I see a great future for him. He will be the new Jefferson Farfan".

In Universitario's next match, Polo scored his first professional goal, the opener in the 5-0 thrashing of Cienciano. Since then he has become a first team regular, accumulating 15 league appearances and scoring three goals.

In June 2011, 16 year-old Polo was included in Universitario's U-20 team that hosted the first ever edition of the U-20 Copa Libertadores, South America's youth club championship. He led his team to glory, winning the final against Boca Juniors on penalties. He finished as his team's top scorer with 3 goals.

Although arch-rivals Alianza have virtually won the local championship, Universitario are still very much alive in continental competition. Last Friday they guaranteed a place in the quarter finals of Copa Sudamericana, with a penalty shootout against Argentinian Godoy Cruz, after both legs ended in 1-1 draw. Polo was his team's undisputed hero, providing the assist for the away goal and scoring the dramatic 85th minute equalizer at home.

Universitario may have little time left to enjoy its jewel, but he might still leave them with a parting gift.
